Tucked away in the heart of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, Gardens House is one of the city’s most charming and versatile wedding venues. I recently had the joy of photographing Natalie & David’s wedding here, and the day was a perfect blend of lush garden elegance and relaxed celebration.

If you’re dreaming of a Gardens House wedding, this post will give you a first-hand look at what makes this venue so special — along with tips from my experience as a wedding photographer to help you plan your day.

About Gardens House - Melbourne’s Hidden Wedding Gem

For couples looking for a venue that’s both central and surrounded by nature, Gardens House Melbourne is hard to beat. Built in the 1850s, this grand heritage property sits within the Royal Botanic Gardens and has the kind of timeless architecture that works beautifully with almost any wedding style.

The venue offers sprawling lawns for outdoor ceremonies, shaded garden paths for portraits, and elegant indoor spaces for receptions. Every corner feels photogenic — and because it’s tucked away inside the gardens, you have a sense of seclusion that’s rare in the middle of the city. Making the most of the grounds, Natalie and David hosted an Italian-inspired dinner, with guests gathered at long tables under the evening light.

a summer ceremony on the lawn

Natalie and David’s wedding day was everything you hope for in a Melbourne summer — warm sunshine, a light breeze, and skies that stayed clear right through golden hour.

They chose to hold their ceremony on the back lawn of Gardens House, surrounded by towering trees and the soft sound of birds in the background. One of the things I love about photographing a Melbourne Botanical Gardens wedding is how secluded and peaceful it feels, despite being right in the city.

Their aisle was framed by creative florals from Lucy Loves Charlie, perfectly complementing the garden’s greenery. Guests gathered under the shade of the trees as Natalie walked down the aisle to live acoustic music. The atmosphere was relaxed but full of emotion — the kind of ceremony where you can feel the connection between not just the couple, but everyone present.

An elegant reception at Gardens House

At the front of Gardens House, the reception space was styled to perfection — no surprise, given Natalie’s creative background. Long tables were dressed with flowing runners, elegant lampshades, and seasonal blooms in soft, tonal shades. Dj Chris Ng set the mood as the sounds of Róisín Murphy floated in the background.

Guests mingled on the lawn during cocktail hour, taking in the surrounding garden before finding their spot on the long table for dinner and speeches. One of my favourite parts of the evening was listening to the warm words being shared in the glow of the festoon lighting.

Tips for planning a Gardens House wedding

If you’re considering Gardens House for your wedding, here are a few tips from my experience:

  1. Time your ceremony for golden hour portraits – In summer, a later ceremony start allows for the most flattering, soft light for your couple photos.

  2. Have a rain plan – The interiors are just as photogenic if you need to move your ceremony inside.

  3. Make use of the gardens – Plan a little extra time for portraits so you can explore the Botanical Gardens.

  4. Consider seasonal styling – The gardens change dramatically with the seasons; work with colours and flowers that complement the surroundings.

  5. Book early – Gardens House is in high demand, especially in spring and summer.

Photography opportunities at Gardens House

From a photographer’s perspective, Gardens House is full of variety. You have:

  • The sprawling lawns for big group shots

  • Shady garden paths for intimate couple portraits

  • Architectural details of the house for editorial-style images

  • Easy access to Melbourne Botanical Gardens’ lakes, ornamental gardens, and glasshouses for even more variety

The light changes beautifully throughout the day, and sunset at the gardens is pure magic.

Final Thoughts

Natalie and David’s wedding was the perfect mix of elegance, creativity, and joy — and Gardens House provided the ideal setting for it all to unfold. From the warm summer light to the thoughtful styling and the music echoing through the gardens, it was a day I’ll remember for a long time.
